What is a Geordie If you are from the northeast of England you would know who or what is a Geordie(jordie). There is an area on the northeast of England just south of Scotland that is considered Geordieland. Newcastle, a large city on the river Tyne next to the North Sea, would perhaps be the capital of Geordieland. A Geordie is often taken for being from Scotland but the dialect is really nothing like it. The Vikings invaded Jarrow a small town on the northeast coast way back when and left a scandanavian influence in the dialect. "Howaythelads" means "Come on boys" and is commonly used watching soccer games. "Gancannyman" (go easy),is one of the most common words. The accent is very thick and the words sing together. If you visit from another part of England you may surely have a hard time understanding what is being said. If you have ever heard the phrase "Never carry coals to Newcastle" you can now associate it with Geordieland and Geordies. They are a very social bunch and spend many an hour in the local pubs. They love to sing and it is said that once you make a friend with a Geordie you have made a friend for life!

My first wife had an Italian father, and English mother, and she grew up in South Shields, but they moved to London when she was in her teens. I was working with an American years ago, and when I explained that my wife was half Italian and half Geordie, she was trying to imagine half Jordanian. I was in stitches...
