Seroquel
My father-in-law who happens to be in his mid 90's has been having a hard time sleeping lately. My mother-in-law took him to the Dr's and he sent them off the Neurologist. The Neurologist quickly gave him Seroquel. I was asked to check the drug out even though he was doing really well the two days that he had been on it. So, after hitting the first Dr. site I screamed! What the blazes was this? This drug.......Seroquel was for Schizophrenia and Bi Polar! Aaaaah come on guys -you have GOT to be kidding me. It isn't enough that diet pills are filled with anti psychotic drugs, or that every other commercial is advertising this stuff, or that even they sneak this anti depressant garbage into other household drugs. NO,they can't leave a ninety four year old man alone and let him live his life in peace. He has what is called Dementia (very mild) and a degenerative heart condition. He has high blood pressure, was recently confined to a wheel chair and unable to exercise. So, he is unable to sleep. Every single site I looked at (I gave up at no#10) said in plain English *Not for Dementia *Not for old people *Not to be taken if you have a heart problem *Not to be taken if you have Diabetes history in your family ( yes, it's there) Special note: Older adults have gone into coma and died, subject to Pneumonia. Any signs of shaking take to the hospital immediately and stop taking the drug. I called my mom-in-law and said this looked really bad. She was worried that the Dr. would get mad and that her regular Dr. would not see her since he said don't come back till you see the Nuerologist. But, she said he had been doing soooooooo well on the drug. She was going to wait till Monday and call him. This being Saturday my husband and I were hoping nothing would happen in the interim. Sunday morning we got a call and sure enough he had woken up and was just a mess. Screaming and had no idea where he was. She said it was awful, she couldn't handle him, he wanted to get out of bed. The live- in had a hard time. She then saw what this drug was doing to him and immediately stopped giving him the drug. It's been two weeks now and he is doing fine without it. He's got things to do that keeps him occupied during the day. He likes games and so we bought him checkers and of course he won! Mom decided to give him Tylenol pm and he does sleep through the night now. I checked out YouTube and sure enough there are folks on there that are survivors of the drug some with very crippling stories. I believe we are too quick to take a "pill" and Dr's are too quick to give them. The FDA is responsible for allowing these mind altering drugs on the market. Instead of looking out for the American public and our safety they are allowing drug companies to do it's job for them. The FDA should take a look at their position and take responsibility for it. |
