Reflections
My mother had re married and we moved from our safe little haven to a different town. This new place involved a new school and new friends. The school was built on an old Pit heap and was built in the 1800's. It was a beautiful old place but gradually sinking. I had to walk to school and go under an old railway bridge to get to the main pit. It was a large mountain of tiny particles of coal. The kids would try to run up the pit but of course it was nearly impossible. I can't remember how many times I went home head to toe in coal dust. There was another railway bridge we would have to cross before going down the long path towards the school. For a child the walk seemed to take forever stopping to check out the countless butterfly's on the way. The grass was way above our heads, overgrown and unkept and the Juinor School was hidden way at the bottom of the field. Old Mr.Nelson was our Headmaster. A wonderful, gentle man who loved his pupils. I still see his friendly smile. There were many pleasant memories in that old place and some very wonderful friends. Unfortunetley that old gothic school is no longer standing. It sank I heard.
