One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
A few years ago a friend of mine had a relative who was put into a Psychiatric Hospital for mild depression. She was very concerned that her relative had been coerced into signing a consent to be given ECT (electroconvulsive treatment).(epileptic fit) In other words electric shock. After a lot of researching we found the following: ECT is given to the brain 450 volts at a time. It is given usually 3 times a week, about 10 - 12 times total. 100,000 people a year get ECT for depression. Each ECT patient is left with brain damage, memory loss,loss of function, sense depravation and sometimes death. No one escapes the loss. Treatments cost $800 -$1000 per treatment x 10 treatments cost $10,000. Not including the medical and hospital care. The purpose of the treatments is to "Alter Behavior" ECT is performed in the morning before breakfast.
The patient is given an injection to inhibit secretion. Then he/she is given a general anesthetic intravenously. Next is another injection to suppress muscle spasms during the treatment. As children we are warned to keep our curious little fingers out of the sockets in fear of being electrocuted. We know that we do not touch live wires or we may be killed. Bodies burn on the inside from electricity and our minds are fried. Yes, it would cure your depression - you would not be able to remember why you had it in the first place and would then get depressed because you could not remember how to function! Who on this planet allows this horrible ordeal? Our Judiciary system does not tell anyone to go get ECT, it is decided upon by Psychiatrists alone and yet, it seems it is totally legal.
