Mystery of Color
What is color and how does it work? Color has been known to be beautiful and ugly, to cause feelings of serenity and revulsion. Sounds powerful, but what is it? Color is a perception of the different wavelengths of light. All objects contain pigments, unless they are translucent (no pigment). Pigments reflect light at different wavelengths. These wavelengths have names you are all familiar with; black, white, red, blue and yellow. Know as the primary colors because the other colors are made from them. Blue and yellow make green, red and yellow make orange. If you never got to play with color as a child you have been deprived. It's a lot of fun to play with color, if you have been deprived go out and buy a set of child's watercolors and have some fun! Why is color powerful? It's perception! You live your life via perception, if you like something it's a pleasing perception, if you don't like something you will look away or get emotional and color has something to do with it. What we perceive we react to or we don't which gives meaning to to color. I love pink! I hate pink! Love and hate from a wavelength of light we call pink, that's powerful. This powerful thing we call color hs many principals to it. Just as sound has pitch color has hue. You can have a soft red, a sharp red or a dull red. Much has been written about the psychological effects of colors and the use of these are far reaching into all parts of life. You may not buy a green apple as it is more associated with sour and tart than the sweet and juicy red. To get philosophical is to perceive the yin and yang or black and white. Colors express thoughts, ideas and emotions and interact amongst themselves. If you put a patch of bright red next to bright green and look at it for 10 seconds you will perceive two vibrations competing against one another, very energetic. You can use color to make you feel better in life! You already know what colors you like so experiment and play with it. Paint one wall in your home your favorite color and see if you smile the next day when you look at it. Explore your senses with color!
