All That Jazz
While I was growing up in England I joined a Jazz Band when I was about nine years old. It was common for kids to get into activities back then and it kept us out of trouble. The Jazz Band was fun, I met a lot of new friends. Every Tuesday after dinner I went to practice in the big social hall along with about 60 other kids. I played the Kazoo and learned to march in time with the drums. I envied the girl in front while she twirled her baton and flew it in the air and caught it with ease. She never made a mistake. In season we would take off on a Saturday in the bus all decked out in our costumes and go to another town to compete. I couldn't wait too get home and tell my parents we won! I won a lot of medals. A few for every year I had participated and then some for the group winning in the competitions. Now as I am older I appreciate the adults who volunteered their time, the costume makers, and all the others who put it together. It taught me many good skills, to be part of a group, a musical instrument,timing and control. It gave me pride, loyalty and honor. But most of all it gave self confidence. Jazz Bands may not be as popular as they were in England at that time but I strongly encourage children and parents to provide their child with activities that use their minds and bodies. |
